Business opportunities and challenges in geopolitical crises

Change could be challenging, especially when it comes abruptly and from different directions. At the same time, we deal with change on a daily basis, and a wide range of tools is at our disposal to anticipate and address it better. GUBERNA’s webinar Navigating Geopolitical Risks and Opportunities offered useful advice to our community on how Boards could better navigate through changing environment. Here are some key takeaways:

Change happens gradually, and we could anticipate it by actively scanning the surrounding landscape.
Multiple tools and information sources exist already to equip Boards with better understanding of tacit developments. For example, boards can consider scenario-planning, Foresight, stress testing, i.e. approaches that focus on a larger picture and help in guiding through rapidly changing environments.
Openness and agility are essential in times of change. When several scenarios are possible, boards have to be prepared for any development and have to adjust strategic course accordingly.
As disruptions occur more frequently, boards could consider adding a special agenda item, “a deep dive”, to stay informed about and prepared for possible transformations.

Well-set governance enables navigating through stormy sea of change and becomes crucial for company’s future. Besides, the chair gains even more responsibility to ensure the board deploys its full potential. Change is tough to face, but it is the only way to advance.
