The government plays a growing role as a shareholder in various companies, including in Belgium. The number of SFPIM's participations has since risen above 160. In 2022, SFPIM invested heavily in Ageas and Euroclear to anchor these Belgian financial companies. GUBERNA has been nourishing the debate on the governance of public companies for years.
In the run-up to the 2024 federal elections, GUBERNA's memorandum (9 priorities for governance of impactful state-owned enterprises) highlighted the need for a clear shareholder vision. This was echoed in the federal coalition agreement 2025-2029 of the De Wever I government, which set some benchmarks.
The GUBERNA Yearly Event Public Governance 2025, on 20 May at the Belfius Rogier Tower in Brussels, aims to provide insight into the concretisation of shareholder strategy and stimulate dialogue with relevant stakeholders. A clear vision is crucial to avoid conflicting mission logics leading to inaction or, on the contrary, excessive intervention. The strategy should maximise both economic returns and social added value.
What to expect?
Questions that will be addressed during the ‘Yearly Event Public Governance’ are:
- What should be in the shareholder strategy?
- Who should write the shareholder strategy? Who has the legitimacy? What should the process look like?
- What is the trade-off framework in the acquisition and disposal of shareholdings? What are criteria in the cost-benefit analysis?
You can find the preliminary programme at the bottom of this page.
