“Driving innovative governance: a lever for viable business models and a liveable world”
Why is it so important to integrate the close relationship between environmental and social issues in decision-making? What governance practices would lead to a more desirable society and better organisations? What do we do with interests that appear to be far apart, and might hinder a just transition? But are all interests in fact so far apart? Some new economic indicators and governance approaches point to the contrary …
For some time now, bold initiatives have been reshuffling the cards of corporate governance, with the same underlying hope: how can we emancipate Nature from its status as a (unlimited) resource? How can we institute a deliberative process aimed at reconciling business and Nature?
Some initiatives we heard from during the last years: Nature being invited to sit on management committees. Nature being represented by ecosyndicates. Nature becoming a shareholder in multinationals, Nature becoming a legal entity in some countries…
These initiatives are human-driven, and stakeholders' inclusiveness is a strategic governance issue that deserves adequate attention. In this respect, wouldn't it be more appropriate to consider ‘human resources’ as contributors of value for the company, rather than costs? What about just transitions and the economy of well-being?
These are some of the questions that we look forward to challenging with you. As you know, our GUBERNA Summer School is a yearly moment to reflect on the latest trends and developments within governance.
To inspire and feed your reflection, we are very happy to welcome as keynote speakers:
Thomas Breuzard is a major family shareholder in the Norsys Group and Chair of the Norsys High Committee for Nature, where he is currently leading the roll-out of ‘permaentreprise’, a viable development model for a liveable future invented at Norsys. He is also co-Chair of the B Corp movement in France and sits on the board of directors of Mouvement Impact France.
Thomas Breuzard holds an MBA in international trade and marketing. He began his career in sustainable development consultancy and worked with major groups and SMEs on defining and implementing their CSR strategies. This pragmatic utopian now works in the family business founded by his father, the Norsys Group, a digital services company with over 750 employees, which he has led along the path of B Corp and the société à mission (a status reserved for certain companies whose activity has a societal purpose) to strengthen the alignment between its business and its societal commitment.
Frantz Gault is one of the few specialists in the representativeness of Nature in corporate governance. As such, he has been appointed Nature's representative on the Norsys Group board of directors (with 10% voting/veto rights) and recently published “La nature au travail” (Nature at work) with EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) that proposes a new way of thinking about the relationship between Nature and work. He is the author of Apocalypse Work, an essay published by Dunod which examines work, its meaning and its methods, in the light of the ecological crisis.
A graduate of Sciences-Po in organisational sociology, he studied the anthropology of Nature at the Collège de France, which led him to produce “Natura Naturans”, a documentary questioning the concept of Nature. From 2010 to 2020, Frantz has been a major reference in the field of teleworking in France. In this capacity, he has supported most of the major companies and taken part in public consultations on the subject.
Éloi Laurent is a senior economist at OFCE, professor at Ponts Paris Tech, at the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), Urban School and School of Public Affairs at Sciences Po and visiting professor at Stanford University. Macro-economist by training (PhD), he graduated from Paris-Dauphine and Sciences Po.
His work focuses on the relationship between well-being and sustainability through the social-ecological approach, in particular the exploration of the sustainability-justice nexus (just transitions) and planetary health-human health nexus (“full health nexus”).
He was parliamentary attaché to the National Assembly and assistant in the cabinet of the French Prime Minister. He is the author or editor of twenty books in French and English (translated into nine languages), three governmental reports and around one hundred articles published in French and international journals. (Social ecology, new well-being indicators, resilience and sustainability, just transition, full health, cooperation and trust, territorial economy).
Éloi Laurent recently published: Toward Social-Ecological Well-Being Rethinking Sustainability Economics for the 21st Century (2023), Just Transitions Advancing Environmental and Social Justice (2024)
The day will include workshops to facilitate the pragmatic application of the principles discussed and will end with an interactive panel discussion bringing together leaders around the crucial issue of an engaged social dialogue for viable business models and a liveable world.
